In his homage to Fellini's self-referential masterpiece, 8 1/2, Woody Allen plays Sandy Bates, world-famous director of film comedies who wants desperately to make "serious" movies. At the invitation of a prominent critic, Bates travels to the Stardust Hotel in upstate New York in order to attend a retreat put together to honor his achievements as a filmmaker. What he encounters there is a circus-like atmosphere comprising cloyingly devoted fans, as grotesque as they are obsequious, all professing their unconditional love for Sandy while at the same time wondering aloud why "he don't make 'em like he used to." The crushed director finds a grim sort of solace in his affairs with three wildly different women. As the weekend ends, Bates finds himself bathed in the greasy light of self-recognition and haltingly discovers that he may be more repulsive than any of the adoring fans he so loathes.
