After the success of PRISON ON FIRE in 1987, director Ringo Lam teamed up again with writer Nam Yin and star Chow Yun-Fat to make the sequel, PRISON ON FIRE 2. Lam had previously directed Chow in FULL CONTACT and CITY ON FIRE--Chow had since become an international star as a result of his work with John Woo in HARD BOILED. Once again he plays Ah Ching, sometimes known as Mad Dog, the wisecracking convict who incurs the wrath of the sadistic warden, Zau (Elvis Tsui). The plot follows the story line of the first film. Ching is caught between rival gangs from the mainland and Hong Kong. When Ching becomes concerned about the welfare of his son--who’s been placed in an orphanage--he joins up with Big Dragon, the leader of the mainlanders, and they make a daring escape, leaping from a cliff into the sea, after which they survive in the wilderness by eating snakes and evade their pursuers in a series of exciting chases. Big Dragon then agrees to help Ching get his son from the orphanage and flee to the mainland. But their plan fails, and they are returned to the prison to find that the situation has become even more explosive.
