Tips for Video

  What does BestVideoBuys.com do?

We search the most popular online DVD and Video merchants to help find you the best price on DVDs and VHS video tapes.

What do Sensormatic, Checkpoint, and Generic mean?

Sensormatic and Checkpoint are types of theft detection systems used by retailers in their stores. Did you ever wonder what those little plastic tabs are on your DVD case with the magnetic strip inside? Those are theft prevention tags. If you try to walk out of a store without first demagnetizing the tag, an alarm will sound when you walk through a gate by the exit of the store.

Sensormatic and Checkpoint versions of DVDs and video tapes are only important to retail stores. The same DVD or video tape is contained inside the packaging! You can play both versions on your DVD or VHS player.

Generic refers to standard versions of DVDs or video tapes, without the Sensormatic or Checkpoint tags contained inside or on the packaging.

What region code DVDs do you sell?

Remember that BestVideoBuys doesn't sell any products. We help you find the lowest price at one of our member stores. As a consequence, you should check with each of our member stores to find out what Region Code DVDs they sell. In general, all of our member stores are located in North America and as a result typically sell only Region 1 DVDs. However, check with the store's website before placing our order.

How do I use Best Video Buys to find a movie I want at the best price?

Step 1: Search for a video

Select Title, Actor or Director from the pull-down box.

Select DVD, VHS or Both to constrain your search to that format of video.

Finally, enter your search information in the empty box and click on "Search" or hit RETURN.

Step 2: Identify the movie you want

Best Video Buys will return a list of movies, actors, or directors that match your criteria. If you searched on an Actor or Director and our system could not find an exact match, you will see a list of names that come closest to the search information you entered. Click on the name of the Actor or Director to see all the movies that person has been in.

Next you will see a list of movie titles, including the title, year it was made, format, language, and release year. If you see the version of the DVD or video you want, click on the link "Compare Prices" that appears to the left of the title. If you do not find your movie, repeat your search using different information. Try using words or names as unique as possible.

Result: Compare prices

A list of stores selling that movie will appear. The stores are listed in order by price, starting with the lowest price. Click on the "BUY" link next to a store name if you want to buy the item or want more information about the version and store. The store's web site will open in a new window where you can order the item.

Why can't I find what I'm looking for?
  1. You may have misspelled the Title of the movie, the Actor, or the Director. Check the spelling of the movie title or person, or try a slightly different search term.
  2. The movie may be listed under a different Title or different Actor. Try entering the name of another actor in the movie you want or enter part of the Title.
  3. The movie may not be available through the stores we search. We search the Internet's largest online DVD and movie retailers so we should be able to find all in-print DVDs and videos. However, many video titles have not yet been released on DVD. In addition, out-of-print or hard-to-find videos may not appear in our member stores' databases.
  4. You may have found a bug in our search engine. Send us an email message with the search terms you used and tell us what happened.

Why are there so many different versions of the same movie?
There are three major reasons you see so many versions of the same movie:
  1. Distribution companies publish different versions of the movie for the varying needs of different movie viewers. Some of these different versions include:
    • Different aspect ratios - Some viewers prefer to view movies in their original theatrical aspect ratio. These video versions are typically designated Letterbox or Widescreen.
    • Different audio tracks - There are more and more new audio formats being released. The major audio formats for video you will see include:
      • Mono - A single track of audio containing all dialogue and music.
      • Stereo - Two tracks of audio representing left and right channels.
      • Dolby surround - Dolby 2.0 surround with three tracks: left, right, and rear.
      • Dobly Digital 5.1 - Dolby surround sound with six channels: front-left, front-right, rear-left, rear-right, front-center, and subwoofer.
      • DTS 5.1 - DTS digital surround with six channels: front-left, front-right, rear-left, rear-right, front-center, and subwoofer.
      • DTS ES 6.1 - DTS Extended Surround with seven channels: front-left, front-right, rear-left, rear-right, front-center, subwoofer, and special effects channel.
    • Different languages - VHS video tapes contain a single audio language track. Make sure you get the language you want. DVDs typically contain several language tracks on a single disc.
  2. Movie production companies often distribute Director's Cut and Special Edition versions of their movies. Director's Cut editions differ from the theatrical release in that deleted scenes are often restored. Special Editions typically have special bonus scenes, clips, director narration tracks, and/or mini-features added.
  3. Movie production and distribution companies frequently re-release old movies when they run out-of-stock or when new selling opportunities arise (e.g. an anniversary of the movie premieres, a sequel of the movie is scheduled for release soon.)

Can Shirley MacLaine talk to the dead?
Yes. However, the dead won't hear her because they are, uh... dead.
