Compiled here are the sacred texts, scriptures, and other influential books of the world's major religions. The list is by no means comprehensive and there are dozens of other books that are considered important by adherents of the world's 4,000-or-so religions. The books below are highly regarded not only by adherents of the religions they are associated with, but also by readers and adherents of other religions for their literary, dramatic, and spiritual merits. Some of the books, such as the Egyptian Book of the Dead , are for religions that no longer exist, but are included here because of their importance.

In addition, some of the world's major religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism have dozens of important scriptures -- too many to list here. Other religions such as those of Africa and native North American tribes maintain their traditions through verse and song, and therefore do not have well-established texts. Lastly, some major scriptures, such as the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki of the Shinto religion, have not yet been translated into English.
