19th Century American journalist Joseph Pulitzer established the Pulitzer Prize as part of his will, as an incentive for excellence in the fields of journalism and letters (i.e. books.) Listed here are the Pulitzer Prize winners in Letters in the category of history since 1980. The Pulitzer Prize in Letters: History was first awarded in 1917. Note: No awards were given in 1984 or 1994, and two books were named in 1989.
