19th Century American journalist Joseph Pulitzer established the Pulitzer Prize as part of his will, as an incentive for excellence in the fields of journalism and letters (i.e. books.) The first Pulitzers were awarded in 1917. Listed here are the Pulitzer Prize winners in Letters in the category of fiction since 1980. The Pulitzer Prize in Letters: Fiction was first awarded in 1948. From 1917 to 1947 this award category was called Novel.
