Established in 1922, the Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year. The award is named in honor of John Newbery, an eighteenth-century English bookseller. Winners are picked by the Newbery Medal Committee, which also selects winners for the Caldecott Medal. Both awards are sponsored by American Library Association. Shown below are winners of the Newberry Medal since 1980.
