National Book Award Winning Books (Non-Fiction)

Started by a consortium of American book publishing groups in 1950, the National Book Awards aim to enhance the public's awareness of exceptional books written by American authors, and to increase the popularity of reading in general. The winners are selected by five-member, independent judging panels for each genre, and receive a $10,000 cash award and a crystal sculpture. Shown below are the winners in the genre of Non-Fiction since 1980. Note: Before 1984, there were multiple categories within the Non-Fiction genre. Listed here in the years 1980-1983 are winners in the category of General Non-Fiction (Hardcover).
