    Started by a consortium of American book publishing groups in 1950, the National Book Awards aim to enhance the public's awareness of exceptional books written by American authors, and to increase the popularity of reading in general. The winners are selected by five-member, independent judging panels for each genre, and receive a $10,000 cash award and a crystal sculpture. Shown below are the winners in the genre of Fiction since 1980.
