College Students Recommend "What Books Our Political Leaders Should Read and Why?"

Winners for Best Book Buys®' 2002 Scholarship Program Announced

ALTADENA, CA, March 17, 2003 - Best Book Buys® (www.bestbookbuys.com), a leading online price comparison shopping site for college students and a service of Best Web BuysTM, today announced Stephanie McCullough, a student at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as the grand prize winner of the $1500 scholarship on "What book our political leaders should read and why?" McCullough's winning essay recommending Aristotole's The Politics was chosen from among 18,815 entries from college students across the country.

McCullough writes in her winning essay, "A statesman cannot act efficiently without a clear idea of how and to what end a government should function. Before he can decide in material terms of how to dispose of revenue, relate to other states, or whether to levy a tax, he must understand all the underlying issues. The Politics holds the achievement of this understanding as its aim."

Best Book Buys' second annual scholarship program also awarded $300 scholarships to the following five runners-up:

  • Raghav Chopra, Yale University, Art of War by Sun Tzu
  • Arwen Joyce, Georgetown University Law Center, Islam Today: A Short Introduction to the Muslim World by Akbar S. Ahmed
  • Benjamin King, Brigham Young University, Bowling Alone by Robert D. Putnam
  • Luke Melone, Valencia Community College, 1984 by George Orwell
  • Alexander Provan, Brown University, A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn
More than 4,700 books were recommended in this year's scholarship program. The top 10 most recommended books were:
  1. The Bible
  2. 1984
  3. Animal Farm
  4. Brave New World
  5. Who Moved My Cheese?
  6. Atlas Shrugged
  7. To Kill a Mockingbird
  8. The Prince
  9. Lord of the Flies
  10. Tuesdays with Morrie
"Last year we started the scholarship program to show our commitment to education and to our core customers -- college students," said Best Web Buys President Steve Loyola. "This year we expanded the program by adding additional prizes and changed the question to focus on what advice college students have for our political leaders. We wanted to give them an opportunity to express their thoughts, hopes and concerns."
